- 3 Seijin no Hi
On this day in Japan, young adults dress up in traditional clothes and attend a ceremony at local city offices. They receive gifts and have a party. Like the Quinceanera, clothes are important here, too. Women wear a kimono with very long sleeves (99–107cm), a style which is only worn by single women. Dark kimonos or suits are usually worn by men.
The legal age of adulthood was lowered from 20 to 18 in April 2022. As a result, 18-year-olds can get married, sign contracts, and take out loans without the consent of their parents. But teenagers are still banned from smoking, drinking alcohol, and gambling until they are 20. It is the first change to the law that defines adulthood since it was first set in 1876.
